NBCOT Plan

OTR and COTA pacing calculator

Short answer

Both NBCOT exams give you four hours of exam time. The OTR form has 180 items, which is 80 seconds each; the COTA form has 190 items, which is about 76 seconds each. Multi-select scenario sets take longer than single-response items, so the working target is faster than the average — bank time on the three- and four-option items so the six-option sets do not run you out of clock.

A mix of three- and four-option single-response items plus six-option multi-select scenario sets.

Pace only. NBCOT sets the official format; confirm in the current Certification Exam Handbook.

How this works

Item counts, formats and the four-hour exam time come from the NBCOT Certification Exam Handbook. Appointment time is roughly four hours and 45 minutes because of check-in, tutorials and surveys, but only the four hours count against your pace, so the calculator uses exam time only. The ahead/behind figure compares items completed against the number the published pace predicts at the minutes you enter.

Worked examples

Two hours into the OTR exam the published pace predicts 90 of 180 items. Finishing item 78 at that point is 12 behind — roughly 16 minutes of debt, which is recoverable only if the remaining scenario sets are short. On the COTA form the halfway marker is 95 items.
