NBCOT exam application: eligibility, timing and the 90-day window
Applying for the NBCOT exam requires a MyNBCOT account, academic verification from an ACOTE-accredited program, a character review and a background check. Once submitted, the exam application is valid for 90 days, and the Authorization to Test letter that follows has its own expiry — arriving late, no-showing or rescheduling inside 48 hours costs a $115 ATT reissue fee.
The sequence
- Create one MyNBCOT account. A duplicate account costs $35, so check before creating a second one.
- Apply for the exam. Academic verification documentation must come from your program; applications submitted by a third party — family, recruiter, program director — are invalid, and the candidate is deemed ineligible for three months with fees forfeited.
- Application validity: 90 days. Every component (academic verification, background check, accommodations if requested) must be approved inside that window.
- Receive the Authorization to Test (ATT) letter and schedule at a Pearson VUE test centre.
- Arrive 30 minutes early with two forms of ID whose names match the ATT letter exactly.
The $115 trap
An ATT reissue costs $115 when it is needed because you arrived more than 15 minutes late, arrived without acceptable ID, cancelled or rescheduled within 48 hours of the appointment, or did not appear. The same fee applies when an ATT expires before you test.
Score transfers
One free score transfer or eligibility confirmation notice is available before application payment; afterwards each request is $35. Some states require an eligibility confirmation notice, so check your board's requirement before you pay.
